6th grade State Capitol Trip

On Thursday, April 9, the RCW 6th graders took their annual trip to the State Capitol. The day started at 7:30 A.M. as the bus departed from Sacred Heart. Stops in Renville, Danube, and Olivia filled the bus with students and chaperons. Our trusted driver, Mr. Fisher, transported the excited busload to their first stop, the Minnesota History Center. Students and their chaperons moved from room to room in the history center, exploring events in Minnesota history, artifacts of ancestors, famous Minnesotans and contributions of Minnesotans, and more.

After lunch, the group packed up their gear and souvenirs and walked a couple of city blocks to the State Capitol. The cameras came out as students neared the Capitol building. Aimed at the Quadriga, students snapped photos capturing the regal horses and chariot. As if participating in a relay, the Capitol steps started students in a race toward the Capitol entry. A class picture was taken while waiting for the tour guides.

Once the guides arrived, the group was split into two groups. Both groups were fortunate to have knowledgeable and entertaining leaders. Students were intrigued by the ornate architecture, beautiful artwork, and wonderful sense of both history and future that the Capitol exemplifies. Since the legislature was on break due to the holiday weekend, students were unable to see either house in session. However, the students did have a bit more freedom to question, converse, and visit areas in the Capitol. An hour, and many pictures later, students completed their tour with a few last minute souvenir purchases.

The last stop of the day was on the mall area with a walk through the Vietnam veterans' memorial. The students were able to locate the name of a local Vietnam veteran. After a few last group pictures, the group boarded the bus and began their trip for home. The students represented our district wonderfully. Our chaperons were delightful and dependable. Our bus driver delivered us to our final destinations for the day and all were grateful for a wonderful experience.
